There are so many illegal, online gambling platforms that there are websites that exist to track all the different odds so gamblers can find wagers with the highest return. All these wagers being placed in the United States – including within the state of Alabama – are being placed untaxed. Illegal, untaxed gambling is thought to be widespread, and the state’s three tribal casinos, limited as they are in what they can offer, attract patrons from all over Alabama. Kay Ivey’s gambling study group will have until Dec. 31 to report on the impact of expanded gaming in Alabama — a date that could preclude a gambling compact this year while adding uncertainty about voters getting a lottery proposal on the November ballot. The Governor’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling has petitioned the Alabama Supreme Court to overrule Jefferson County Circuit Judge Robert Vance’s order of March 8, 2010, which directed Attorney General Troy King “to come in off the sidelines” and take over the Task Force’s case against the White Hall casino.
If allowed to stand, Vance’s order would disqualify Special Prosecutor John Tyson and other Task Force attorneys from handling the case unless King gives his “express authorization” for the Task Force to continue. The Task Force’s petition argues that the Task Force has all the statutory authority it needs to represent the State in the White Hall case and that Vance’s order violates the State Constitution’s separation of powers.
